About MEXA!
MEXA! is an archive of independent publications from Mexico selected and activated by artist Paloma Ayala and curator Adriana Domínguez, and commissioned by VOLUMES Independent Publications Fair, Zurich.

MEXA! was first presented in 2017 at the “Focus” section of VOLUMES. The display consisted of a curated selection of zines, independent publications and art books made by Mexican authors from Nuevo León and Mexico City.

A new selection of publications was presented two years later at VOLUMES 2019, with a spotlight on womxn production. This edition of the project, entitled MEXA! The female takeover, included a fanzine workshop addressing the topic of gender violence. Using images and information of recent feminist demonstrations in Mexico, Latin America and Switzerland, participants were invited to share a #feministhashtag in order to create a collaborative manifesto that defended the right of women to live a safe and free life <3 The manifesto was made up of #feministhashtags, and the fanzine that resulted from the workshop became part of the MEXA! archive.

In 2020, MEXA! comes back as a feminist-online takeover, an experimental format that resulted from the challenges posed by the current Covid-19 crisis. The goal of this new activation is to create a collective and collaborative archive of #feministhashtags that articulate the feminist concerns, struggles and demands of recent times, including the problematics that have become visible with the quarantine. The online archive is open for participations of womxn from all over the world, in all languages, as the project intends to create sorority ties with our sisters on this planet.

MEXA! the feminist-online takeover is part of the digital project Inter:Archive, a platform that seeks to highlight the topic of intersectional feminism and queer theory, organised by Oncurating Project Space. MEXA! is currently also a part of VOLUMES LEARN, a project supported by the community based initiative School of Commons.

MEXA! Es un archivo de publicaciones independientes de México seleccionado y activado por la artista Paloma Ayala y la curadora Adriana Domínguez, comisionado por VOLUMES Independent Publications Fair, Zurich.

MEXA! fue presentado por primera vez en 2017 en la sección "Focus" de VOLUMES. La muestra consistió en una selección curada de fanzines, publicaciones independientes y libros de arte hechos por autores mexicanos de Nuevo León y Ciudad de México.

Dos años más tarde, en VOLUMES 2019, se presentó una nueva selección de publicaciones, centrada en la producción de mujeres. Esta edición del proyecto, titulada MEXA! The female takeover, incluía un taller de fanzines que abordaba el tema de la violencia de género. Utilizando imágenes e información de manifestaciones feministas recientes en México, América Latina y Suiza, se invitó a lxs participantes a compartir un #hashtagfeminista con el fin de crear un manifiesto colaborativo que defendiera el derecho de las mujeres a vivir una vida libre y segura <3 El manifiesto está compuesto por #hashtagsfeministas, y el fanzine resultante se convirtió en parte del archivo de MEXA!

En 2020, MEXA! vuelve como una edición feminista en línea, un formato experimental que resultó de los desafíos planteados por la actual crisis de Covid-19. El objetivo de esta nueva activación es crear un archivo colectivo y colaborativo de #hashtagsfeministas que articulen las preocupaciones, luchas y demandas feministas de los últimos tiempos, incluyendo las problemáticas que se han hecho visibles con la cuarentena. El archivo en línea está abierto a la participación de mujeres de todo el mundo, en todos los idiomas, ya que el proyecto pretende crear lazos de hermandad con nuestras hermanas de este planeta.

MEXA! The feminist online takeover se presenta dentro del marco de Inter:Archive, una plataforma digital que busca destacar el tema del feminismo interseccional y la teoría queer, organizado por el Oncurating Project Space (Zúrich). Paralelamente, MEXA! forma parte de VOLUMES LEARN, un proyecto apoyado por la iniciativa comunitaria School of Commons.
